Steering Committee ordered to meet monthly as Islamabad, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa prepare to welcome over 6,000 athletes across 28 sports
ISLAMABAD — Pakistan will host the 14th South Asian Games from April 4 to 11, 2027, following confirmation of the schedule by the Steering Committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
The dates were finalized in coordination with the South Asian Olympic Committee, marking the conclusion of a six-year delay since the Games were originally scheduled for 2021. The event will be held across Islamabad, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and will mark Pakistan’s first time hosting the Games since Islamabad last staged the event in 2004.
Monthly Oversight Ordered
Chairing the meeting, Ishaq Dar directed that the Steering Committee convene on a monthly basis going forward, rather than at irregular intervals, to ensure sustained oversight of preparations. The meeting also approved the appointment of a National Coordinator to oversee day-to-day arrangements, along with the formal composition of the Steering, Organizing and Provincial Committees tasked with executing the Games.
The Deputy Prime Minister instructed all relevant authorities to maintain close coordination, ensure the timely completion of venues, and uphold the highest standards in hosting the event.
Scale of the Games
Organizers expect more than 6,000 athletes and officials to compete across 28 sports, underscoring the scale of the undertaking. With venues distributed across multiple provinces rather than a single host city, coordination across federal and provincial authorities on infrastructure, transport and security will be central to preparations a factor officials say informed the decision to move to monthly reviews.
Meeting Attendance
The Steering Committee meeting was attended by the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Inter-Provincial Coordination, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa, the Secretary of Inter-Provincial Coordination, and senior officials representing both the federal government and the provincial administrations involved in hosting the Games.
