United States President Donald Trump announced that his Board of Peace has reached a landmark agreement for the complete disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye, in what he described as a “historic” breakthrough on Truth Social.
A senior Hamas official confirmed to the BBC that the group has agreed to the plan, marking the first time in Hamas’s history that it has committed to fully disarming, the central sticking point that has blocked progress on the second phase of the ceasefire agreement since it was first reached in October 2025.
Under the terms of the agreement, Hamas’s weapons would be transferred to the National Committee administering Gaza, with police weapons handed over first and heavier weaponry decommissioned in later phases. In parallel, Israeli forces would withdraw as an International Stabilization Force moves in, with a newly formed Palestinian police contingent assuming responsibility for security on the ground. Full implementation is expected to take several months.
However, significant uncertainty surrounds the deal’s execution. Israel has not yet publicly commented on the announcement, and US officials warned that Trump would be “very disappointed” if Israel failed to follow through with its withdrawal obligations. A separate Hamas negotiator cautioned that the group would not implement its side of the agreement if Israel did not meet its own commitments, while Israeli strikes have continued inside Gaza despite the existing ceasefire framework.
The agreement, if implemented in full, would represent the most consequential shift in Gaza’s political and security landscape since Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007, and a potential turning point in the broader effort to establish lasting civilian governance in the war-devastated enclave.
