Pakistan, Singapore Deepen Ties with Disaster Management MoU on 60th Anniversary

Pakistan and Singapore mark 60 years of ties with a new MoU to strengthen disaster preparedness and emergency response.

Pakistan and Singapore have moved to strengthen bilateral cooperation as they mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, with disaster management emerging as a key area of practical engagement. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar met Singapore’s Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan in Islamabad on October 30 to review longstanding ties and explore opportunities for expanded cooperation.

The two ministers discussed trade, investment, connectivity, skills development and stronger business-to-business and people-to-people exchanges. They also examined cooperation at multilateral forums and Pakistan’s engagement with ASEAN, particularly ahead of Singapore’s forthcoming chairmanship in 2027. Dar reiterated Pakistan’s emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy as essential instruments for resolving disputes and promoting regional and global stability.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding between Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in disaster preparedness, emergency response and resilience against natural disasters.

The MoU adds an important operational dimension to the countries’ diplomatic relationship. Pakistan, which faces recurring climate-related emergencies, can benefit from institutional cooperation, technical exchanges and disaster-response expertise. Singapore, meanwhile, gains an opportunity to deepen engagement with Pakistan through practical cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic channels.

However, the agreement’s impact will depend on its implementation, particularly through joint training, technical assistance and effective coordination between the relevant institutions. As both countries approach six decades of diplomatic relations, the meeting signals an effort to translate longstanding goodwill into tangible cooperation across economic, institutional and regional priorities.
