Ukrainian forces launched a massive overnight drone attack on Moscow and its surrounding region into Tuesday, firing more than 390 drones over roughly 10 hours in one of the largest aerial assaults on the Russian capital in months, prompting temporary flight restrictions at several airports.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that air defences intercepted 81 of the drones but provided no details on wider damage or casualties. Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed that a drone struck a residential building in Chekhov, south of Moscow, with a nearby home also catching fire.
Geolocated footage cited by open-source monitoring channels identified the Chekhov site as a steel fabrication plant, while a separate blaze was reported at one of Russia’s largest tire-recycling facilities. A warehouse fire was also reported in nearby Koledino, adjacent to a major Wildberries distribution centre, the second time in weeks that infrastructure linked to the retailer has been caught up in Ukrainian strike activity.
Ukraine has not officially confirmed the Moscow-region attack, consistent with its practice of neither confirming nor denying specific deep-strike operations inside Russian territory.
The Moscow assault follows a night of strikes on July 27 targeting Belgorod and Rostov-on-Don, which left 12 people injured in Belgorod and two killed and five injured in Rostov. President Zelensky separately confirmed that Ukrainian drones struck a Black Sea export terminal in Rostov, continuing Ukraine’s expanding long-range campaign against Russian energy infrastructure, logistics hubs, and industrial facilities.
The escalating frequency and scale of Ukrainian drone strikes deep inside Russia reflects Kyiv’s broader strategic shift toward striking the economic and industrial backbone sustaining Moscow’s war effort.
