Speaking during an Interactive Dialogue under Item 4 at the UN Human Rights Council, Kashmiri activist Muzzammil Ayyub Thakur raised concerns over prolonged detention, imprisonment and restrictions on political activity in Jammu and Kashmir.

In his address, Thakur named Masrat Alam, Qasim Faktoo, Shabir Shah, Mian Qayoom, Yasin Malik, Asiya Andrabi, Fehmeeda Sofi and Nahida Nasreen, highlighting their cases while urging international attention to the treatment of Kashmiri political prisoners.

Referring to Kashmiris who died during or following periods of imprisonment and detention, Thakur asked the Council:

“How many more names must this Council hear after they’re dead?”

He called on the international community to address human-rights concerns while prisoners are still alive and urged greater scrutiny of detention and political space in Kashmir.
