UN Secretary General António Guterres has praised Pakistan’s leading role and strong support for the United Nations and its peace and development agenda.
Guterres made the remarks on Tuesday when Pakistan’s UN envoy, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, paid him a farewell call in New York, according to a press release of Pakistan’s UN mission.
The UN chief particularly lauded Pakistan’s mediation efforts and its contribution as a current member of the Security Council.
Guterres also congratulated Ambassador Asim on his appointment as Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary and wished him all the best.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced the appointment in September after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved it. Ambassador Asim will succeed Amna Baloch, who retired on 17 September.
Ambassador Asim thanked Guterres and his team for the support they gave during his time at the UN. He also praised the Secretary General’s leadership and his advocacy for multilateralism, the UN Charter and international law.
Ambassador Asim became Pakistan’s UN envoy in April 2025, replacing Ambassador Munir Akram.
The remarks are diplomatic recognition and do not involve any new UN resolution or agreement.
