A massive flash flood and landslide disaster along the Nepal-Tibet border has killed at least 177 people, while more than 800 remain missing. Nepal’s disaster agency says 826 people are unaccounted for, including more than 529 tourists.
The US Geological Survey says the disaster was triggered by a glacial collapse and debris flow, which caused catastrophic flooding downstream. Rescue operations are being hampered by heavy rain, damaged roads and bridges, difficult mountain terrain, and a lack of communications.
Hundreds of foreign nationals, including Indian, American, Australian and British tourists, are among those missing. Nepalese authorities have deployed thousands of security personnel, while helicopters are being used to search for survivors and deliver emergency assistance.
Authorities are also monitoring the possibility of further flooding as debris blocks waterways in the affected region. Scientists warn that climate change may be increasing the risk of glacier collapses and other hazards in high-mountain environments.
