Fourteen infants were died after a fire broke out early Wednesday morning in the gynaecology ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. The fire erupted on the third floor of the Mother and Child Hospital, where newborns were reportedly being kept in incubators or on oxygen.
According to Health Minister Mustafa Kamal, the fire was reportedly triggered by a blast in an air-conditioning system and was intensified by the presence of oxygen tanks. Rescue teams responded with six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances, while at least one infant was reportedly saved by a doctor.
The tragedy has raised serious questions about fire safety and emergency preparedness in Pakistan’s public hospitals. A family member told Dawn that renovation and repair work was ongoing in the building when the fire occurred, forcing recently delivered mothers to evacuate through the stairs.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an investigation, while Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani called for effective fire-safety systems and strict action against negligence.
The incident has renewed concerns over building safety standards and enforcement in Pakistan, where fires in large buildings remain a recurring danger.
