Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again found himself at the centre of an awards controversy after being bestowed the “Guardian of the Blue Horizon” award during a visit to Seychelles, an honour created just three days before his arrival, with Modi as its sole recipient.
The award certificate drew immediate scrutiny after it was found to contain glaring spelling errors, with “republic” misspelled as “repubblic” and “Seychelles” as “Seycheeles.” The document was also widely flagged as AI-generated when run through detection software. The Seychelles foreign ministry subsequently claimed that a working draft had been accidentally circulated, though the explanation did little to quell the criticism.
The episode is the latest in a recurring pattern of bespoke honours appearing around Modi’s foreign visits. Last month, Israel’s parliament created the “Medal of the Knesset”, described as one of the country’s highest honours, just days before Modi’s arrival, again making him its only recipient. In 2019, Modi became the first and sole recipient of India’s Philip Kotler Presidential Award, whose website has since gone dormant.
In the past year alone, he has also become the first foreign head of state to receive Ethiopia’s Great Honour Nishan and the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
The controversy has drawn sharp reactions at home. India’s opposition Congress party responded bluntly, saying Modi would come running for any award offered to him, while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defended the recognition as a proud moment for India.
The frequency of hastily created, first-and-only honours coinciding with Modi’s diplomatic visits has raised broader questions about the nature and credibility of such awards on the international stage.
