Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian is visiting Pakistan on June 23 at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Islamabad has confirmed the visit.
The purpose of the visit is that Tehran wishes to personally convey its gratitude to Islamabad for Pakistan’s mediatory role in de-escalating regional tensions and restoring peace. The visit follows the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States on June 18 and the subsequent Lake Lucerne Summit at Bürgenstock, Switzerland, where a 60-day roadmap toward a final deal was agreed upon.
Pakistan’s role in facilitating the agreement was formally acknowledged at the highest levels. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif endorsed the MoU as mediator. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, head of the army, was specifically mentioned for his pivotal role in facilitating the two sides. The Islamabad MoU is now the formal term for the agreement that brought an end to the active hostilities between Washington and Tehran.
President Pezeshkian’s decision to visit Islamabad in person, days after the Bürgenstock talks concluded, signals the weight Tehran places on the relationship with Pakistan. It also consolidates Pakistan’s position as a credible and effective diplomatic actor in one of the most consequential regional conflicts in recent years.
